Product Notes

This award-winning series helps students to build confidence in their ability to "do math" and develop the knowledge and skills required to become mathematically literate. In this lesson multiplication is investigated not as a rote method of computation but as a logical process. The importance of place value in multiplication and the difference between addition and multiplication are studied. An alternative method of multiplication, called lattice multiplication, is introduced to enhance the student's ability to accurately multiply multi-digit numbers. The concept of division as the opposite of multiplication is discussed. This lesson establishes what you are doing when you divide so that Lesson 3 can develop the method used for division. Students Will Learn: To explain the meaning of multiplication, the ability to multiply using the lattice method, to make valid estimates for multiplication problems and to explain the meaning of division.
